Roberta Donnay is an exception. She covers such songs as Johnny Mercer's "Drinkin' Again," and Bob Dorough and Fran Landesman's "Small Day Tomorrow" in the same way that she covers her face in the photo on the cover of her album: with a wide brim. Her engagement with the lyrics, her supple sense of time and her soulful, little-girl timbre remind you of Billie Holiday. She is elegantly accompanied by the pianist Eric Reed and a discreet rhythm section.
- Mike Zwerin, Herald Tribune Intl.
***********************************************************************
- Roberta Donnay is a major new find. The fact that Orrin Keepnews produced her record is a tipoff, plus that her backup trio includes pianist Eric Reed with four guest appearances from tenor saxophonist Dave Ellis. Roberta has a very appealing voice somewhat reminiscent tone-wise of Norah Jones. However, she is much more of a jazz
singer than Jones, swinging, using subtle improvising, making sometunes quite bluesy and displaying versatility. What's Your Story is a very impressive effort, highly recommended.
It makes one happy that Roberta Donnay has decided to pursue a jazz career.

this is a dark story about a woman who is deadly to be around ..
it's a warning to men & to the man she's with now; it's based on 3 women I've known all wrapped up into one.. kind of steely-dan-ish w/muted trumpet & electronic sound effects flying around.. |

you're the soul survivor
of my teeny little ship and i would drink you down, babe but you know i'm tryin' to quit and if you come to Paris i would marry you, you see and we would sail away from there one happy family, oh, no.. if you give me comfort i will search to find a tent if you wrap me in silk blankets i will look for a lament you keep me on your pedastal then i will surely fall i'm perfectly imperfect and i'm here to serve you all, oh no.. 'cause i've been walkin on broken glass i don't know how this ferry's gonna last i'm just floatin' on down your shore 'till i reach the edge 'till i reach the edge 'till i reach the edge.. you're the soul survivor of my teeny little ship and i would drink you down babe but i fear to take a sip you know alligators can turn into crocodiles and if you add some wings then you will see that dragon fly, oh no.. you're my soul survivor you're the only one for me come & sail me down, babe beneath your big blue sea and we will go to Paris & dress all up in furs and we will jam beneath the moon i'll wear my hair in curls.. 'cause i've been walkin on broken glass i don't know how this ferry's gonna last i'm just floatin' on down your shore 'till i reach the edge 'till i reach the edge 'till i reach the edge.. |

this is a spoken word/acid jazz track
that has lots of amazing BE-BOP alto sax & gorgeous piano ! this is a story about me; when I was a teenager I hung out at an after-hours jazz club in DC called Harold's Rogue & Jar. it was here that I first started to learn about jazz & jazz musicians. what an education i got there! like music heaven! the title of the CD "back before the why" comes from this lyric. and the story starts in present day w/a quote from Orrin Keepnews ~ when he first met me he took me to Yoshi's to hear Tommy Flanagan ~ he said "JAZZ IS MY RELIGION" that night which gave me my first line and the rest is history... |

of my elementary school a santa cruz cafe, a new york subway even jim morrison's tomb and it's spoken out loud when i'm shoppin' today i was at mollie stone's this guy walked right by me, said "pretty redhead" then expect me to follow him home... someday i'd like to teach those guys manners to write a poem to a girl instead something like "winter is fallin' and springtime is hummin' and i'd sure like to be in your bed" and i wonder how the old man is feeling as he sits on his bench by the sea remembers when he was just a boy carving hearts into a tree... graffiti is written on highway signs from hartford to hollywood they keep tryin' to cover it throwin' white paint all over it i'd paint it too if i could i'd say "world, crazy world, how i love you and all that you've given to me the heartache, the breaks, the shivers, the shakes you fill me with ecstasy...” (c 2001 roberta donnay & joel jaffe) |

tears fell at 3 am
just another fight, he was drunk again her lip was bleeding but he didn't ask she went to the kitchen, poured herself a glass he said "babe it's the last time" but she smelled a lie after two and a half years of gin and denial what she ever saw in him she was wonderin' too she lived in his fantasy - it was almost through jody walked out in the night and out of his life she just had enough of this personal strife jody walked out in the night and out of his life she just had enough of this personal strife and she took down the pictures from all of the walls and she stood there a second, said goodbye to the halls then she wrote him a note stuck to the back of the phone "don't come lookin' for me cause i'm never comin' home, never comin' home" she packed up her clothes, stuffed her bag in the car drove to the next town, lit a cigar..all she had was a dollar to her name she said it's gotta get better, it's gotta get better, 'till it gets worse again jody walked out in the night & out of his life she just had enough of this personal strife jody walked out in the night and out of this lie she just had enough of this personal strife jody walked out in the night and out of his life she just had enough of this personal strife jody walked out in the night and out of this lie she just had enough of this personal strife, personal strife.... love can be ...all those pretty promises invadin' her night love can be...all those pretty promises invadin' her night, baby written by roberta donnay & joel jaffe |

it's a rainbow of color
in a sky full of thunder when we open our eyes do we see what we want to see there is only one planet that circles the sun that we all call our home and in only one moment if we all decide we can change our destiny one world, one dream, one universe one dream of peace, of unity one hope, one love, one family one wish for all humanity we can lift every border if we stand up together with compassionate hearts we can strive for equality nothing is crueler than war we've learned from the past we want war no more like waves crashing to shore our hearts never stop yearning for the dawn of peace heart, spirit, and mind our souls unite so everyone can be free one world, one dream, one universe one dream of peace, of unity one hope, one love, one family one wish for all humanity © 1994 Roberta Donnay |
One World
Notes
"One World", Roberta's new single, was originally written and performed for the United Nations' 50th Anniversary - it quickly became an official theme of the UN50. Performed for the delegates in '94 and '95, the song was also introduced as a world peace theme in Japan at the Minon World Peace conventions. "One World" is currently being sung in five countries and has been performed by countless students in schools in the United States, chosen by the students to be their graduation theme. "One World" welcomed Rosa Parks to San Francisco in 1995, as well as the city's celebration finale at Union Square. In 1998, Roberta was invited to sing "One World" at The People's Assembly meeting with 130 representatives from around the world.
She also performed for benefits for Nicaragua, the rally for the Chinese people of Indonesia, members of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce, and was invited to perform at the international world peace conference Hague Appeal for Peace '99 in The Netherlands. |

looking for a love divine out of the crowd i saw a flickering light i had to look twice you shined so bright well i never believed in a love made in heaven but your love was heaven sent your heart is so pure so fragile and sweet i had to look twice for fear we might meet and fly away.. catch a falling angel wipe away the tears you've been crying catch a falling angel an angel of your own catch a falling angel you'll have a love to always treasure cause a falling angel is an angel you can love forever.. i had my share of broken dreams and you appeared with broken wings now with you by my side i can do anything and i'm showered, overpowered from heaven above my heart is an altar to worship your love catch a falling angel wipe away the tears you've been crying catch a falling angel an angel of your own catch a falling angel you'll have a love to always treasure cause a falling angel is an angel you can love forever....forever.... written by roberta donnay, mark pistole, & scheherazade saleh |
